ABOUT THE ARTWORK
NEOLEXICON is a ten-minute black-and-white video animation compiling nearly two hundred words in bold, block typeface that have been coined by the artist. From Hyperception to The Hatrix, these neologisms flash on the screen, aiming to define and design a new vocabulary for navigating contemporary existence: describing systems of control (Authoriterrorism), cycles of unconscious violence (Egosystems), and the feedback loops of mediated life (Scroll Hole, Immedia). The lexis also extends towards terms of mindfulness and evolution, offering language for unique states of consciousness and enlightenment (Bloomstate, Neon Renaissance, Holosophy). These contrasting concepts operate as a diagnostic tool, at once naming the mechanics of the present and opening onto more speculative contemplations of the mind and the nature of reality itself.

ARTIST INFORMATION
Signe Pierce (b. 1988, Tucson) is an American artist who draws on a multimedia suite of image-making techniques with a postdigital technicolour palette to explore notions of gender, identity, and the dissolving boundary between simulation and the real. Pierce delves deeply into the impact of digital culture on contemporary life, often blending elements of performance, photography, video art, and more recently music to create immersive experiences. A self-termed ‘reality artist’, she often draws on her body in durational neon-soaked performance works that address broader systems of violence, sexuality, and paranoia within the American psyche. By juxtaposing vibrant, hyperreal visuals with critical commentary, Pierce’s art not only highlights societal constructs but also challenges viewers to question their perceptions of reality and the influence of technology on self-expression.

Pierce was born in Arizona and currently lives and works in New York. She received her BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 2011. Pierce has been represented by Annka Kultys since 2017 and her first solo exhibition with the gallery, Faux Realities, was on view at Annka Kultys in 2017, an exhibition of 30 photos that questioned the nature of truth and artifice within the digital image. In 2018, she received a second solo exhibition, Metamirrorism, then in 2019, Signe Pierce presented Digital Streams of an Uploadable Consciousness, and earlier this year in July 2024, the gallery featured Pierce’s Abstract Reality exhibition, featuring several of her videos including ‘American Reflexxx’ (2015), a jarring social experiment and durational performance video by the reality artist Signe Pierce and the American artist Alli Coates.

Pierce’s video works and performances have been presented at international institutions, galleries, and biennials including MoMA, New York, US (2019); ANNKA KULTYS GALLERY, London, UK (2024,2019); Eigen+Art Lab, Berlin, Germany (2019); MdbK, Leipzig, Germany (2018); ANNKA KULTYS GALLERY, London, UK (2018), Athens Biennial, Athens, Greece (2018); Düsseldorf Photo, Düsseldorf, Germany (2018); Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France (2015); Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, US (2014); and the New Museum, New York, US (2014).
